Should I buy Exponent if I’m already strong at SQL?

Buy it selectively. The SQL module is worth $40 of the $199 subscription. The rest is optional. If your SQL is solid, use Exponent’s diagnostic to confirm and spend the saved time on system design constraint practice, which is where most FDE candidates actually fail.

How many rounds does the Palantir FDE interview have?

Three rounds: a technical screen (SQL and live coding, typically 60-75 minutes), a systems design case (often involving Palantir’s data platform context, 45-60 minutes), and a behavioral interview grounded in Palantir’s Foundational Principles (45 minutes). All three run sequentially over one to two weeks. There is no fourth round at the standard L3 level unless you are negotiating against a competing offer.

What’s the real failure mode in Palantir FDE interviews?

Constraint rigidity. Palantir FDEs work in environments where requirements change, data is incomplete, and clients have non-negotiable security constraints. The interview is testing whether you can think under those conditions. Exponent teaches you to solve problems. You need to practice solving problems when the problem changes mid-solve. That skill is not in any course. It is in deliberate practice with adversarial modification.
