About Us

About Software Engineers

Practitioners first. Career intelligence for software engineers from IC3 to Staff+.

Who We Are

Software Engineers is a career intelligence hub for software engineers at every level — from IC3 to Staff+. We publish system design guides, career progression frameworks, and salary analyses that help engineers make informed decisions about their careers.

Our editorial focus is on the technical career track at top technology companies. We cover system design interviews, coding strategy, behavioral preparation, and the often-opaque path from senior to staff engineer.

We are practitioners first. Our guides reflect how engineering careers actually work at scale, not how career coaches imagine they work.

What We Cover

  • System design — Deep dives into distributed systems, scalability patterns, and real-world architecture decisions as they appear in interviews and on the job
  • Career ladders — Level-by-level analysis from Junior (L3/E3) through Staff and Principal (L6/L7+), with actual promotion criteria at specific companies
  • Interview strategy — Coding, system design, and behavioral rounds at Google, Amazon, Meta, Apple, Microsoft, Netflix, and top-tier startups
  • Compensation data — Total compensation benchmarks by company, level, and location — including base, stock, and bonus breakdowns
  • The senior-to-staff gap — Why most engineers stall at senior and what the successful ones do differently

Our Methodology

We build our career intelligence from verifiable sources:

  • System design content is reviewed against real production architectures and verified interview patterns
  • Salary data is aggregated from Levels.fyi, Glassdoor, Blind, H-1B disclosures, and direct reports from engineers
  • Career progression analysis is based on published engineering ladders, promotion committee patterns, and practitioner interviews
  • Interview guides reflect actual interview loops — we specify which companies use which formats and when those formats last changed

We do not fabricate data points. When our sample size is small, we note it. When information is anecdotal, we label it as such.

Editorial Independence

Software Engineers is not a recruiting platform. We do not accept payment from employers to feature their companies or influence our career advice. Our recommendations are based on data and practitioner experience.
